About Charm
Our mission is to reverse climate change and return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂, profitably. We convert waste biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into permanent, underground storage as carbon removal, or reform the bio-oil to produce syngas for fossil-free steel.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. In 2021 and 2022 we delivered thousands of tons of carbon removal via off-the-shelf pathways, and also deployed our first R&D prototype pyrolyzer of our own. In the next 18 months, we'll build and deploy the next pyrolyzer revision, demonstrate our fossil-free ironmaking pilot, substantially expand our operations in Colorado and put thousands of tonnes of CO₂e underground.
We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on engineers, fabricators, operators, and forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
About the Role
You will be a critical member of the Research team at Charm. You will lead development of the analysis lab, identifying high impact measurements for Charm and the best methods for making those measurements. You will work closely with fellow scientists and engineers in both the Research and Development teams. You will function as a subject matter expert on chemical principles as well as sampling methods. You will be responsible for planning, collecting, and evaluating samples captured during pyrolyzer and ironmaking operations.
You will report to the Head of Research in Charm’s San Francisco office.

Responsibilities:

  • You will develop methods for generating analytical understanding from our pyrolysis and ironmaking programs.
  • You will create and manage Charm’s analytical data management plan, including creation and implementation of laboratory quality plans, QA/QC measures, and SOPs for sampling and data collection.
  • You will create and maintain vendor relationships with third party labs that perform significant portions of our analytical work.
  • You will manage our analytical chemistry lab, and advise Charm leadership of when to bring analytical capabilities in house.
  • You will advise Charm leadership on how best to use analytical chemistry to de-risk our programs.

Requirements:

  • A safety first approach to sampling and analysis
  • A commitment to rigorous science
  • Previous research lab experience, pilot plant, or test stand work in chemical, rocket, or heavy industries
  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field with 4-6+ years of analytical chemistry experience in industry or PhD with 2+ years of experience in industry
  • Demonstrated practical ability to develop quantitative analytical methods
  • Skills required to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot GC, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, and other instrument systems
  • Proven ability to manage and hold vendors accountable
  • Leadership and mentorship to lab technicians and operators on sample collection and analysis procedures
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and comfort with multi-tasking in a fast-paced, ever changing, ambiguous environment
  • Ability to build out analytical capabilities in accordance with business needs, providing technical and financial justification for bringing analytical capabilities in house

Bonus (but not required):

  • Experience working around hazardous gases, combustibles, and/or high energy systems
  • Familiarity with thermal conversion processes
  • Experience with measuring metals including but not limited to X-Ray fluorescence, X-Ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma techniques
  • Familiarity with Linux, Python, and scripting languages
  • Knowledge of gas and particulate sampling nuances
